Hello to all wine and historic village lovers!
Today, I’m taking you to a hidden gem in the province of Cuneo, a place where history, wine, and tradition merge into an unforgettable experience: Dogliani.

A Dive into Dogliani's History

Dogliani's story has deep roots, tracing back to Roman times. Legend says the name itself comes from “Dolium Iani,” or “the vase of Janus,” an ancient amphora found in the town that proves its winemaking heritage dates back centuries. The Middle Ages marked a period of major growth, with the construction of its walls and a castle, the remains of which are still visible. Over the centuries, Dogliani has maintained its unique character, resisting foreign rule and preserving its identity.

Places That Tell Stories

Walking through the streets of the historic center, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. The Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie is a must-see, a place of deep spirituality and architectural beauty. Don't miss the Church of Santi Quirico and Paolo, which holds priceless works of art. However, the true beating heart of the town is the main piazza, where the weekly market takes place—an explosion of scents and colors you're sure to fall in love with.

Festivals, Legends, and Traditions

Dogliani is a lively town that celebrates its history and traditions. The Feast of St. Paul in January and the Dolcetto Festival in September are perfect opportunities to experience the town's true essence. And speaking of Dolcetto, there's a fascinating legend here: long ago, Dogliani's wine was sour until one day, a desperate farmer prayed to the patron saint. The next day, his vines produced incredibly sweet grapes, giving birth to the renowned Dogliani DOCG. A curious anecdote? It's said that former US President Thomas Jefferson, on his tour of Europe, tasted and enjoyed the Dolcetto di Dogliani, promoting it as a "king's wine."

Where to Stay: An Unforgettable Rest

After exploring every corner of Dogliani, what’s better than a well-deserved rest? For a truly special experience, I recommend looking for accommodations in Pollenzo, a charming hamlet of Bra, just a few kilometers from Dogliani. Here you can stay in places surrounded by nature, with breathtaking views of the rolling hills. And don't forget that Pollenzo is home to the University of Gastronomic Sciences and the Bank of Wine—two excellent reasons to visit!
