Historical Notes: From Origins to the Marquisate

The earliest documented traces of Novello, whose name is thought to derive from the Latin “Novellum” (new settlement), date back to the medieval period. Thanks to its strategic position, the village quickly became a key location for controlling the surrounding territory.

Over the centuries, the fiefdom passed through the hands of various powerful noble families, including the Del Carretto and, later, the Asinari bankers. The significant turning point came in 1740 when the House of Savoy elevated Novello to a Marquisate for the Origlia family of Bene Vagienna, consolidating its importance in the Piedmontese nobility.

Its imposing and majestic Castle is the most evident testimony to this past of power and lordship, and it continues to dominate the Langa landscape.

Popular Beliefs and Anecdotes

Like any self-respecting village, Novello holds its own legends. The peasant life, dictated by the rhythms of the land and the vine, gave rise to stories passed down orally through generations.

It is said that in the mists that envelop the hills in autumn, the spirits of old vignaioli (winemakers) still wander, intent on supervising the perfect ripening of the grapes. Less frightening, but widespread, is the anecdote linked to Barolo: it is rumored that the first bottles of this famous wine, produced in the estates around Novello and neighboring municipalities, were so sought after that they pushed nobles to pay the price of a small property just to secure a portion of the precious harvest.

Must-See Locations

  • The Castle of Novello: The emblem of the village. Although privately owned, its Neo-Gothic architecture and impressive façade are absolutely worth a visit, if only to admire the exterior and enjoy the view it offers from its summit.
  • The Parish Church of San Michele Arcangelo (Saint Michael the Archangel): An example of local religious architecture, serving as a landmark for the community.
  • The Wine Trails: Novello is a commune of Barolo. The best way to get to know it is to walk or cycle among its crus, discovering the vineyards that give life to one of the world's most famous wines. Don't miss a stop at the local wineries!

Village Festivals

Life in Novello, while tranquil, is brought to life by events primarily linked to celebrating the products of the land.

  • The Truffle and Wine Fair: Although Novello is not the hub of the main International Fair, it actively participates with side events, such as "Open Doors in the Winery", offering the perfect opportunity to taste Barolo directly from the producers in a convivial and authentic atmosphere.
  • Patron Saint Festivals: As throughout the Langa, celebrations in honor of the Patron Saints are a time for community gathering with processions, markets, and, of course, excellent local food and wine.

An Illustrious Figure: Agostino Rossi

Among the figures who brought prestige to Novello is the distinguished theologian Agostino Rossi, born here and who became a personality of great importance in the 19th century. Director of the Royal Work of Providence in Turin and administrator of the Pious Refuge for Beggars under the reign of Charles Albert, Rossi was not only a man of faith but also a philanthropist and author of important works. His story is an example of how even from small villages, minds can emerge that have a significant impact on society.
