A History of Feudal Lords and Great Wines

Castiglione Falletto has a fascinating history rooted in the Middle Ages. Its name comes from the Latin term castillio, meaning "small castle," and the noble Falletto family, who owned it for centuries. The imposing and majestic castle still dominates the village today, a silent witness to a past of feudal lords, battles, and prosperity. The town's importance has always been linked to its strategic position and the fertility of its land, which is ideal for growing grapes. It's no coincidence that Castiglione Falletto is one of the 11 municipalities that can proudly bear the name of Barolo, and its vineyards are considered among the most prestigious in the area.

Village Festivals and Anecdotes

Despite its small size, Castiglione Falletto is a lively town rich in traditions. Among the most cherished festivals is the Patron Saint's Festival of San Lorenzo, celebrated on August 10th. During this festival, the village comes alive with stalls, music, and, of course, plenty of opportunities to taste local wines. Another event not to be missed is "Calici di Stelle" (Goblets of Stars), which takes place on the night of San Lorenzo and offers the chance to sample Barolo under a starlit sky. A curious anecdote concerns the Torre Campanaria (Bell Tower), which is said to have been built with stones from an ancient Roman fort. The bell was once used to warn residents of the arrival of brigands and enemies.

Folk Tales and Legends

Like any ancient village, Castiglione Falletto has its own legends. The most famous is that of the Ghost of the Castle. It's said that a knight, killed in battle, still wanders through the castle's rooms, protecting his hidden treasure. The elders of the village say that on full moon nights, you can hear his footsteps and the clanging of his sword. Another legend concerns the Madonna del Carmine, revered in a small chapel outside the town. It's said that her statue was miraculously found in a field, and since then, she has been considered the protector of the vineyards.
